My favorite season is undoubtedly summer, what with the sun, swimming, barbecues, biking, and the annual promise of all your dreams coming true. And let's not forget summer lovin'. In short, in the colder months, summer seems to signify guaranteed happiness.
But is it true? Expectations can always lead to disappointment, in one form or another.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this song is an embodiment of all that is summer.
At first, Martha seems to be happy. After all, she's burning with desire. But I'm pretty sure she's saying "I can't keep on crying" (or is it trying?). Either way, yes, the heat feels good. But is it too much? Is her love requited? High blood pressure doesn't feel good. And then later she's definitely crying. She doesn't understand. She can't explain. "Is this the way love's supposed to be?" she asks. Wouldn't we all like to know. It's tearing her apart and yet she says nothing about wanting out. Is this a straight up love song or a break-up song? It's unclear.
It's bittersweet. It's summer.
P.S. Why don't those white people dance?
